Reflections by Paul Cooke, France Mission’s Director
We seem to be living in a very disunited world, don’t we? On 25th February, a Guardian headline read: “Macron’s meeting with Trump prompts cautious optimism in France on Ukraine”. But just five days later, following extraordinary scenes in the Oval Office, the international edition of Le Monde ran with: “Europe, shocked by explosive Trump-Zelensky White House row, prepares for a decisive summit”.
In this context of international disunity, how encouraging to see evangelicals in France taking up the challenge to work meaningfully together! For the first time ever, God willing, 2025 will see the CNEF (National Council of French Evangelicals) coordinating joint worship services all over France on the same date: 5th October for the majority, but 8th June for churches in the French Caribbean. The main objective will be for churches to celebrate Jesus Christ together as they bear witness to His Good News, but also to deepen the unity of French evangelicals, to proclaim their identity in Christ, to share their testimony of His salvation, and to foster relationships that will encourage people to continue working together.
It's anticipated that more than 60 of these joint services will be held all over France, organised by departmental CNEF Committees or local CNEF sections. Services will be interdenominational and open to all. Some will be looking to supplement services with other types of events (concerts, youth gatherings, social action, evangelisation, etc.).
A national steering committee has been set up to coordinate and support local groups in this ambitious project. The CNEF will be providing communication tools (visuals, video clips, etc.) adapted to each departmental committee and local section, as well as practical advice for organising the events.
I hope to be able to report more about this initiative as the year progresses but please be praying for all the discussions and organisation that need to be taking place now. May everything resound to God’s glory!
